Repairing My Roof

Four Tips To Help You Prevent Roof Leaks

Roof leaks are one of the worst problems a homeowner can have because, not only does this mean that you probably need roofing repair, it also is likely to cause damage to the interior of your home as well. This just means further repairs that need to be made to your home as a whole. Here are four tips to help you avoid this problem:

  1. Inspect the Expansions on the Roof: These "expansions" are anything that juts out from the roof, which includes the chimney, skylights, and more. It's important to inspect these things every once in a while to ensure that they are not causing a problem with water flow on the roof. These areas are the most common areas for roof leaks to start and it's usually because the edges are not properly sealed and need to be resealed, so be sure to look for that. If you aren't sure, then this is why it's important to have a professional roof inspection done at least once a year.
  2. Inspect the Drip Edge: The drip edge on the roof is important for directing water away from the roof. When a drip edge is missing, then it's a problem that is going to cause water damage. If you notice a missing drip edge, you need it replaced right away.
  3. Inspect the Attic: It's not enough to inspect the attic alone. You also need to be inspecting the attic, which is directly underneath the roof. This is where homeowners generally find out that there is a roof leak because of dripping water, pools of water, or mold and mildew growth. If you notice any of these things, you definitely have a roof leak that needs to be addressed right away and repaired by a professional.
  4. Inspect the Gutters: Finally, you must be sure that the gutters are clean and clear for water to flow away from the roof and the home. If the gutters are blocked, water is going to begin to pool onto the roof and drip down on the home. You also want to be sure that the gutters are not dipping, which prevents the water from flowing all the way through and that there are no missing parts of the gutters or leaks.

When you consider these four tips, preventing roof leaks should be easy to do, which will ensure that you are less likely to deal with the frustrations of a ton of home repairs all at once because of one.
