Repairing My Roof

How To Tell If Your Roof Has Hail Damage

A hail storm can potentially cause some serious damage to your roof. That is why you will want to visually inspect the roof after a storm, and try to identify any type of damage that could need professional help to repair. Here are several ways that you identify that your roof needs repair after a hail storm.

Look At The Granules

One area that you may not think of looking for roof damage is your gutters. The impact from hail can cause damage that loosens the granules on the individual singles. Those granule slide down the surface of the roof and into your gutters. Rather than inspect the shingles that are high up on your roof for missing granules, just check out what has been left behind in the gutters. A lot of granules that have collected are a reason to be concerned.

Find Shingles That Are Missing

Shingle can also be ripped off a roof due to the strong winds of a hail storm. Start by simply walking around your house and looking for loose shingles that have fallen off. You may not easily be able to spot where the shingle came from, but finding the material is a sign that a shingle is missing from somewhere.

Look For Dented or Bruised Shingles

All of the impact from the hail can leave small indentations on the roof. They may look like harmless damage at first, but what really should be fixed is the roof underneath the shingles. If you are able to reach the shingles that have dents, try applying pressure to the area with your hand. If the roof pushes inward in these areas, the damage has extended to your roof deck. Simply replacing the shingles will not be enough to fix the damage

Find Torn or Cracked Shingles

You may have shingles that have remained on the roof, but are torn or cracked in a way that will let water get into your roof. While walking across the roof is a good way to look for them, you can also get a good view from the ground.

Stand far away from your home so that you can see the roof, and inspect it visually with a pair of binoculars. It will allow you to get a close look from the safety of the ground. If you do spot damage, you'll need to reach out to a roofing company like The Roof Doctor to replace those damaged shingles for you.
